Lou is a bit of a Will Young fan on the quiet so we went to see him at the MEN Arena on Friday.
A question: What is the point of those ears / horns / sticks / spinny things that light up which, for some reason, people hawk on the approach to concert venues? More specifically, why do people buy them? Do they think the artist will look out and think "hey, look at that - there's a woman who probably works as a finance manager and she's wearing some light-up ears! She must be real fun to be with, so I must invite her backstage after the show." Do they? Hmm?
Well, this wasn't a flashing lights-a-thon to rival the awful Steps concert we once went to, but we did have two girls standing in front of us, both of whom were wearing flashing rabbit ears which, when added to their height, were directly in front of our eyes for the entire show. So there we stood, watching the concert, with two multicoloured flashing ovals inches before our eyes, making us both feel really ill and slightly disorientated. Oh yes, and there was a very gay man next to them, dancing very, very quickly to every single song (including the ballads), and making everso witty remarks such as "oooh, it's hot in here - somebody open the sunroof" and, whenever somebody shouted "WE LOVE YOU, WILL!" he'd shout back "I LOVE HIM MORE!" Oh dear.
So what was the concert like? One-word review: boring. Three-word review: colourful but boring. There were lots of costume changes, some clever staging, but on the whole it was very dull. Plus not having ever listened to any of the albums all the way through, neither of us recognised the vast majority of the songs he sang. What we did know though was that every time the momentum was built up and the audience were on their feet he trotted out another ballad.
Still, after we see Mitchell & Webb do some quality comedy next month, our next music concert will be Muse. That should be better.
