So we went to Liverpool for the day, spent a couple of hours walking around Liverpool One, their swanky new shopping centre which is actually a bit rubbish, and bought two coffees which made us both feel sick. Walked to Pizza Express near the arena, were told we couldn't book for later as they had "too many bookings" (odd), and so we moved the car to one which would be easier to leave once the concert was over and sat there for a while, people watching. Back to Pizza Express, got seated straight away (despite there being "too many bookings"), was gutted they no longer sell the amazing Theo's Favorita pizza (BOOOOO!) but still had a nice American Romana, and then over to the gig.
They're very security-conscious at the Echo Arena. Visitors form two queues at each entrance, one for men and one for women, and you are frisked & asked to identify the contents of your pockets. Once inside we headed to the arena floor, walked to the middle, and watched the support act (Doll & The Kicks) who we'd seen before and are very good.
9PM came and Morrissey led his band out onto the stage. Immaculately dressed in a suit he cracked a joke ("It's Saturday night, it's raining, and it's Liverpool. It's perfect,") and launched into a superb version of "This Charming Man". After this, "Black Cloud" followed, and as Morrissey walked along the front of the stage, shaking hands with the audience, some utter div threw a plastic bottle or pint glass of water at him, the missile bouncing off his forehead, covering him with water. "Goodnight," said Morrissey, left the stage, and that was that. We were home for 10.30.
What kind of idiot pays £40 or so for a concert ticket and seemingly thinks the person they have paid to see would love it if a heavy object was hurled at their head from close range? I'm staggered. I really don't blame Morrissey for ending the show there and then, and at the moment the promoter and venue are trying to reschedule the concert, hopefully this time without idiots being present at the front.
Grrr.
